[Not Practical] no translation -> rel="nofollow"?

Postby Tero Kankaanperä on Thu Jul 24, 2008 12:29 am

Hi!
I've been looking at my sites information on Google Webmaster Tools and Analytics. I'm not please with the situation. I translate only selected articles from my site to English, otherwise it is in Finnish. I've selected the option "Original content with information" from Joom!Fish settings but this leads to the situation that I get most of my articles duplicate on Google. When I realised this I tried to find a better alternative, but there is none available. There is no way to make the link to content that has not been translated disappear from the site. And therefore all non-translated articles are duplicated on search engine indeces. It occured to me that this could be resolved if Joom!Fish added rel="nofollow" to the urls of articles that haven't been translated. As I understand very little about the internal working of Joomla or Joom!Fish I have no idea if this is possible or how complicated implementing it to Joom!Fish as option would be. So I'm placing this as a wish to developers and asking if this can be done?

Hi,

Just for me to clarify this. You say if we add an parameter &rel=nowfollow to an URL Google realized that it should not crawl this URL?

In general this can be done but will cost performance as we need to either indicate the URL upfront or fix this during the routing process. Within the routing process a check if we know this translation might cause a DB query which is not really cool.

Have you tried to add this parameter yourself (e.g. manually in the translation of an menu)? I'm just curious if this resolves your issue.

Thanks for the idea

Well, you understood my idea perfectly, just the minor detail that I was suggesting this kind of addition to urls:
Code: Select all
<a href="something/" rel="nofollow">

This works, but come to think of it now it sounds like an undoable thing. And since my earlier post I've learned that Google actually recommends using meta-header tags instead. It would probably be better and simpler to add a
Code: Select all
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

tag to the actual page that has no translation than what I originally suggested. Logically and probably functionally this might belong to the Missing translation plugin.

Hi,

yes and this is also easily possible. If this helps already we can try to do this in the first place and then see if it works out.

I'll report back when the change is committed to SVN or within a package.

"no follow" should avoid to follow links on page.
Is "no index" that should not permit to search engines to index.

It can obtained through joomlatworks seo patch, it adds various meta tags you can manage in the article backend.
But I don't remember if it integrates well with joomfish.
Hope this could be usefull...

bye

Better were:

for the sites without translation.

Maybe the best way: If no translation available, don't show the item. This is my wish for JoomFish configuration to solve this and other problems.

Should we wait for release 2.1 in order to avoid duplicate content on articles which do not have a translation?

Yes, this will not be resolved in 2.0 for sure.

Thank you all for looking into this issue, great that this will be looked at for the 2.1 version!
Still I have one question that I suspect most of you have addressed.

I have a several sites that I have made multilingual with the base language English. As a result I also have most content at the root URL and the EN specific URL ( www.domain.com/xxxx and www.domain.com/EN/xxx)
To avoid duplicate content should I
A) disallow for indexing of the /EN/* URLs via robots.txt or
B) redirect all /EN/* to the root without /EN

Or perhaps do I have this all wrong and should I not worry about it because it is the default language?

Once again thank you all for suggesting the other item to the wishlist for the next release.
* PHP version 5.2.8
* Joomla! version 1.5.8
* Joom!Fish version 2.0.2 stable
* Apache 2.0.63
* Linux 2.6.18-92.1.22
* Database version 5.0.67-community
* memory_limit from phpinfo is 64M
