Joom!Fish for Joomla 1.6

This forum is to discuss everything related the future release of Joom!Fish dedicated to Joomla releases 1.7 and higher. The first edition of this release will be re-using the existing data storage logic and therefore be compatible with the Joom!Fish 2.2 released regarding table structure and logic.

I too have been waiting and waiting for a Joomfish update. Yesterday I tested http://www.faboba.com/en/composants/falang which is an adaptation of JoomFish 2.1.7 for J1.7. It is currently in Beta 3.

I have posted a review on the JED that describes my experience with the beta version, and another short post in the J.7 thread of this forum.

Although I would rather use an update from the JoomFish project, it is good to see that there is at least an option now for a decent multi-lingual solution.

I will test drive a Joomla 1.7 soon. My first concern is language and my main concerns is:

1— Can I easily translate everything like Joomfish/joomla 1.5
2— Can non-web savy users easily translate everything like Joomfish/joomla 1.5
3— Can all my important component like virtuemart, aicontactsafe, SimpleCaddy and others easily translate everything like Joomfish/joomla 1.5

If any of those questions return a no, I will continue to give my customers Joomla 1.5 sites and start to move on to another platform completly.

Maybe Wordpress? Can’t beleive I’m saying that....

Anybody can answer those questions before I start?

This is from the development team at Joomla

It has never been the intention of the Production Working group to replace Joomfish or other similar components in this series, just to propose a simple solution for simple sites.
This has been stated multiple times in all docs and tutorials.

Joomfish people have always been welcome (and still are), as any other developer, to participate in core development.

This put everything in perspective.

For everybody that take the development of a Joomla 1.6/1.7 multilingual REAL solution seriously, I suggest to become Gold Member or donate money to the Joomfish team or help in anyway is possible. The solution will not come from Joomla.

I’m not associate in anyway to the Joomfish project, but my main source of income is developing sites mainly on the Joomla platform.

The lack of a pro solution for multilingual site will obligated me to switch to other platform automatically.

I’m looking right now!

I'm looking into moving my entire site over to Wordpress because of this problem. I can't stay behind on the Joomla updates much longer. It would be a huge task, since I have the equivalent of 1800 pages of info on there. So I hope there'll be a solution soon, or I'll have to start the process.

It seems with 1.7.3 there are again some changes in the language management. It would be nice to have a more clear goal and roadmap of the other developers as it get's a bit confusing atm.

Those guys at Joomla they told me that you are welcome to talk to them, maybe it will help. I guess you have to do the first step, Maybe you can help them on the language mechanism implementation.

Hi,

Jean-Marie is a very old and good friend of mine. We are both co-founders of Joomla and worked together ever since. I have meet Christoph on a Joomla!Day in France once a while ago. Both are positive people from my point of few.

Do you know that Jean-Marie is also a Contributor here in the forum? You see it is not that easy sometimes for us old fellows to find the right steps, may be we need help of people like you ;-).

From my point of view it is very complicate atm as I just do not understand the direction they are heading. I'm a person working based on agile plans. These plans are changing on demand but I try to focus on commitments and things that I plan before I do it. Without such a plan it is hard for me to just contribute something based on getting a status.

In Joomla there is currently a tendency that feels like: I develop something I think it is cool and then I try to convince others that it is cool. If I succeed it will be merged into the core. This sounds odd for me as there is a chance of wasted time if you do not succeed to convince others. I would prefer a way in which some people thing about a plan/wishlist and clearly state that they need help getting something particular implemented.

Anyhow I have an idea to organize something during J and Beyond 2012. May be this is a chance to overcome these issues. You are invited if you like.
