The Joom!Fish development team is pleased to announce the official and public release of the Joom!Fish 2.0 Beta today.
The new version can be found in our download area and allows native integration of multilingual solutions into Joomla! 1.5. Joom!Fish 2.0 is an enhanced and native implemented extension using the Joomla! 1.5 framework. It incorporates with the Joomla! 1.5 legacy mode for other extensions as well as the native integration.
The current implementation is 95% feature completed and already once tested by all our contributors and donators. However we recommend not using this version for a productive website yet. After this Beta the Joom!Fish team will release an Release Candidate and then the stable version. Depending on the feedback the RC is expected to be published soon.
The open issues related to this release is a final cleanup of code, the finishing of language files together with the translators and the integration of bugs found in the system. For the feedback towards these topics we opened a free support forum . This forum is open and does not include priority support. If you require priority support and you can subscribe to our support forum including direct access to our development team.
Last but not least thank's to all our supporters, contributors, translators and many, many more that supported the project in the past month. Your feedback and encouraging comments are a very valuable source of energy and motivation for our team.
Kind regards
Alex, Geraint, Ivo and Robin

After the first release of Joom!Fish 1.8 several smaller bugs and improvements had been found by our community. Most of those smaller issues had been implemented in the 1.8.1 or 1.8.2 releases which are available at the moment.
As we consider the version 1.8 the latest version for Joomla! 1.0.x series we like to inform you that we will maintain the 1.8.x releases ongoing. We plan to review every month if important changes are found and what we can do about those issues. We always will collect some issues for one patch and will make sure that the patches do not affect your already used data and translations. Our goal is to create a very stable and reliable solution based on the feature set of Joom!Fish 1.8 for all Joomla! 1.0.x installations.
The next update and patch is planed for mid January 2008. If you still have some ideas and suggestions please feel free to report them either on our tracker or in the forum.

Since the release of Joom!Fish 1.8 and 1.8.1 we got several donations to the project. We are very thankful for those donations and like to thank all those of you. Special thanks goes to Rolf Fey from webpublicity.com for a very generous donation which made him to the donor of the month :).
The new support forum dedicated to all the contributors and donors is picking up slowly as we are now getting a good group of people there. We are looking forward reading your questions and solving the related issues.
Thanks for all your support

With a big THANK you we like to announce that the Joom!Fish version 1.8 is about to be completed. The Release Candidate is available on our download page and open for productive testing.
After a three month internal Beta period with several testers on our SVN and technical mailing list we have completed all open tasks and fixed the known bugs in the system. Joom!Fish 1.8 is a feature release which provides several requested features and new ideas which have been discussed in the last time. We would like to thank all of you for your feedback, suggestions and bug fixes.
We have split the presentation of the new features in various
documents available on our site. This is because otherwise it is just
to much.
Ivo wrote already a nice article about his first impressions explaining the new features in an brief overview.
Geraint wrote an article about the new features in explaination.
This article describes the whole new fallback language, the preview
mode and the side by side preview which is now implemented. Not to
forget the alternative language bot which allows you to present your
articles with an easy accessible translation for your users.
A second article talks about the possibilities to manage regional content
with the Joom!Fish and explains how you could manage various contents
which are related to several countries in your company. How to use the
Joom!Fish to manage those sites and the related content is described in
detail.

Hi all,
I'm a bit sorry for the confusion of the changes to the license lately. Let me explain a bit what happend and why.
The old MambelFish project was released under the Apache License as I had the impression that this license fits best with what I wanted to achieve with the Fish. I always understood that the fish is a highly integrated extension for Mambo/Joomla! and it requires a free license. I used the Apache license and added a little rider to protect the name and the brands related to the project and Think Network, my company.
With the first release of Joom!Fish Geraint joined the team and we spoke about the license together. We came to the conclusion that a release of the Fish based on the GPL would be more suitable. However, we recognised that the Fish is more as a library than an application and so decided to release Joom!Fish 1.7 under the LGPL. We missed some files as we said already in the first news about this topic thats why we did it again for 1.8.
After talking to legal adivors we figured out that this change of license is not legally feasible. I'm not an expert in this topic but I understand that a component that uses GPL based code like the Joomla! Database classes can not make its own license lesser restrictive. O.k. this basically means our idea of releasing Joom!Fish under LGPL would only work if we have a LGPL based Joomla! Framework.
So basically what does this mean?
It means that the released version of Joom!Fish 1.7 can not be legally released under LGPL and that, in effect, the license should be interpretted as GPL. I also think we will need to change this in the package files sometime. For 1.8 we will use the GPL as this is one of the complaint licenses we can use.
Sorry again for the confusion but we need to stay GPL in order to use the correct license.

After the migration of the old forge to the new system (many thanks to the whole Joomla!Code team!) we have updated the repository of our existing content element files in the File Release System as well as in Subversion.
Check out joomlacode.org for the latest files and details. Please remember that most of those files are provided by either users or developers who are working for those projects. If you have questions or need support in the integration contact them directly as they will know most likely what it is about.
For further information about content element configuration please check out our documentation section.

There are several talks about licensing and open source based commercial solutions in the Joomla! related forums, blogs and news. As the inventor of the core Joom!Fish project and one of the main copyright holder I like to give you some insights about our position and some clarifications of what we have in mind.
With the release of Joom!Fish 1.7 we changed the whole code to the Lesser GNU Public license. This step was not because we want to commercialize the project but to make sure that developers which build commercial solutions on Joomla! and the Joom!Fish are able to do this. With the upcomming release we fixed all documentations and license files to fully integrate this step.
Read more to understand some more details behind the license model we use and why we do so.
